Challenges

In order to avoid raising student tuition, Ohio University was searching for a way to reduce the merchant service fees associated with accepting credit card payments. The university wanted to continue offering its students the convenience of paying tuition and other fees using credit and debit cards, but with a built-in option to offset the university’s cost of accepting these types of payments.

Solution

Ohio University now uses Transact Payments’ payment processing solution, SmartPay, which offers the institution the flexibility to manage merchant service fees in one of three ways: (1) by absorbing the entire fee, (2) by absorbing a portion of the fee, or (3) by passing the entire fee onto the student. Having this choice enables the university to find a balance between affording costly service fees, and continuing to provide students with convenient payment options.
