As per Campus ID News, mobile-driven experiences are becoming a crucial factor for students when selecting a college.
Our research agrees, with 74% of students believing this would create a better college experience.
Students experience one-click purchasing from their favorite online retailer, the ability to schedule payments directly from their phone, the option to pay through the account or card of their choice anywhere and at any time, and the ability to expect visibility and transparency throughout the entire transaction.
So, many students expect colleges to provide a consumer-like experience. Students believe that considering ease of payment is essential when rating colleges.
Institutions are under immense pressure to improve their operational efficiency, cope with staffing shortages, and meet the expectations of students who are looking for a more connected and mobile-centric campus experience.
Join 450+ schools streamlining the acceptance of contactless payments across campus with one centralized, cloud-native solution and giving students a feature-rich shopping experience with Transact Cloud POS.
Our research discovered a major issue for college students on campus. On some campuses they are unable to use their phones for tuition or food payments.
Give your students what they CRAVE—a fast, secure ordering experience from their mobile phones.

Imagine experiencing the joy of shopping without the stress of standing in line, retrieving your wallet or checkbook, swiping your debit or credit card, or waiting for the transaction to go through. Shopping at stores with Just Walk Out technology using Mobile Ordering makes this a reality for students and faculty alike. There are distinct benefits for students and administrators who choose to use these tech-driven stores.
Just Walk Out technology by Amazon is a big hit with students—just ask Onyel Bhola, Assistant Vice President for Facilities, Planning, and Operations at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia. In March, Marymount became the first higher education institution in the U.S. to have an on-campus convenience store powered by Amazon’s tech.
“Students love the store! It has become a central part of our community. Saints 24 (our contactless shopping store) is located in Gerard Lobby, our most popular student lounge. The store is open 24 hours a day and allows students to have access to produce, snacks, and convenience options,” Bhola said.
Students at Marymount are particularly excited about the contactless aspect of the store, as well as the ability to buy grab-and-go snacks at any time of the day or night.
“Saints 24 allows us to offer an expanded array of healthy and traditional snack options for students 24 hours a day. Before the store opened, students would only have access to items within the vending machines after hours. Our store features fresh fruits, vegetables, and other items such as hummus and yogurt to provide key support to our growing population of vegan and vegetarian students,” Bhola said.
In addition to benefiting students, the store has also been a boon to administrators and operational processes, Bhola noted. Administrators are still compiling key metrics associated with the impact of this partnership, however, many administrative units have reported positive effects, such as:
Offering checkout-free stores is right on trend with student demands. Recently, Transact published a first-of-its-kind national research study of current college and high school students (primarily Gen Z), “Exploring Financial Habits and Technology Use Among College Students.” Transact partnered with Jason Dorsey and the Center for Generational Kinetics (CGK) to provide our clients and business partners with a snapshot of students’ priorities and expectations from campuses in terms of security and digital payments. The study revealed:
